If the last 13 years have taught me anything at all, it’s that you should work with nature not against it, particularly if like me, you’re a lone gardener most of the time, who is no longer in the first flush of youth.

Many years ago, when the plant buying part of our gardening bug was at it’s height, we bought 7 azaleas in the sale at a local garden centre. It was before we moved here so must have been over 13 years ago.

Much has been written in recent times about the sad demise of that much loved British institution, the public house. A combination of economic woes, the smoking ban and drink drive legislation, have all contributed to it’s decline. Recent figures show that each week 25 pubs are closing down for good.

A few weeks ago I took the fleece barrier from around the strawberries. It had been a 100% success, and we’ve had the best strawberry crop ever.

I’ve known for some time now that, despite what you might read in the ornithological press, sparrows are alive and well, and living in great numbers in our Lincolnshire garden.
