Moved

Building a garden from scratch is easier said than done, but for 15 years that is exactly what we did at Ravendale House.

It was often hard work, but we loved it and the result was our 'blank canvas' of 1998 was transformed into a beautiful and productive garden, which I hope you have enjoyed reading about in this blog.

But tide and time wait for no man and sad to say I am no longer able to give the garden the attention it deserves. It would break my heart to see it fall into disrepair, so the time has come to move on.

I will continue this blog in memory of 15 happy years gardening, but I don't have a garden at the moment so will start by telling the story of the last 9 months, so if you want to read the story from the beginning, please click here.

Coronation Street, the world’s longest running TV soap is my favourite TV programme. Not everyone’s cup of tea I know, Peter hates it, but to be honest he doesn’t know what he’s missing. The programme has moved on considerably since the indomitable Ena Sharples and Elsie Tanner.

As we were taking a stroll up the lane about a week ago we saw a large notice attached to one of the farm gates giving details of an attempted robbery a few days earlier by a scrap dealer in a white Mercedes van.

I’m sure we all remember how the world held it’s breath back in October 2010 as we watched the rescue of the Chilean miners.
I found this the other day, and it made me smile.

Well, there’s no gardening getting done at the moment. The weather, though sunny, is very cold with a wicked wind and Peter is on the settee suffering from a heavy cold. He’s had it ages and can’t seem to shake it. I keep waiting to get it myself. Sods law being what it is I expect I’ll have it for Xmas. I tried going for a walk and a potter about this afternoon, but my heart’s not in it, so my thoughts turned to less physical and much warmer pursuits.

I’m pleased to report that the visiting moorhen is still here. I didn’t see him at all yesterday, but he made an appearance after lunch today, so that’s OK.

After my sad news of the other day regarding the 2 dead blackbirds, I woke up this morning to some good news.

Over the 13+ years we’ve lived here there have been various incidents where birds have flown into the windows of either the conservatory or the house. I assume it’s something to do with how the light reflects from the glass, somehow misleading or disorienting the creature.

First of all I feel I should come clean and say that I’m a bit of a ‘bah humbug’ person when it comes to Xmas. I think it’s probably the result of having no children and no close family. Don’t get me wrong, I used to love it, but as I’ve got older it has become less and less significant or meaningful.

It occurred to me after I’d written my last post, that I have no idea what a linnet looks like. So in case you don’t either, I went in search of a picture. To be honest I could get them in the garden, because I bet they look a lot like a sparrow from a distance. Anyway, here it is.

As you might have gathered there isn’t much gardening getting done at the moment, and so to pass the time I’ve been clearing out a cupboard where I stumbled upon an old book of poems that had belonged to my mum.
