I sometimes think I’m too soft to be a successful gardener. Just about every gardening book you read will at some point tell you to ‘thin out’ your seedlings, either to prevent overcrowding or to help ensure only the strong survive.

Among the plants we brought with us when we moved here, were several clematis. Unfortunately, most haven’t done well, in fact of the 10 or so varieties we brought only 3 have thrived and prospered.

Today I received an acknowledgement from Suttons Seeds for my plant order, so that’s OK. In fact it’s even better than OK, as they don’t appear to have charged me for p&p!

A few years ago I ordered some so-called ‘plug’ plants by mail order, Pansies I think they were. After a long wait they finally arrived, and what a disappointment they were. Small and weedy, not really big enough to be out on their own. Not many survived and those that did were wimps. I wrote a letter of complaint to the company but received no response, and I vowed I would never buy plants by mail order again.
