I decided to dig up my white onions today. The tops were dead or dying, so it seemed like the right time. What a disappointment.

When I got into them it soon became obvious that things were not good. They had hardly any roots, hadn’t really fattened up and the vast majority of them were rotten.

I would have blamed it on poor quality sets, but it turned out that the red ones that I grew myself from seed were little better.

Fortunately it looks like the shallots have made an effort, but what’s happend? They were all treated the same. Perhaps it’s been too dry.
