Well the snow that was forecast yesterday has arrived overnight. The weathermen had a severe weather warning out for heavy snowfalls and said there would be 2cm – 5cm at lower levels and up to 15cm on higher ground. I still work in old money so for me that is a worst case scenario of 6″.

When we woke this morning there was barely a covering, more like dried sago than snow. What a disappointment. (It’s easy to be smug about snow when you don’t have to drive in it.)

I was born in Yorkshire over 50 years ago, and I can remember when heavy snowfalls meant heavy snowfalls, and I’m not talking about 6″. Schools never got closed in my day, and most people made it to work too.

Some places have had it worse than us, up to 10″ according to the TV, and it looks like the main event here could be later today, indeed it’s lunchtime now and it’s just started snowing big flakes. You know, the kind you remember as a kid, big and soft, landing on your gaberdine sleeve to reveal beautiful and intricate patterns.

They say it’s the worst snow in 18 years, and London has ground to a halt. Trains, planes and buses all cancelled or disrupted. The public are up in arms. How can we not remember how to deal with snow? I’ve never heard anything so ridiculous.
